After ordering the Birch original mattress, I decided to give the brand’s natural topper a try, too. There are a few reasons we went with the Birch mattress brand in the first place. For one, it’s among the best mattress brands if you’re looking for an organic, all-natural bed. Birch products are made up of materials like GOTS-certified cotton, eco-INSTITUT-certified Talalay latex, and hypoallergenic organic wool. The company also doesn’t use chemical flame retardants (or any toxic chemicals, for that matter). When the mattress arrived, we tried the bed both with and without the topper, figuring we could just return the topper if we didn’t love it. Now, I prefer a bed that’s a bit plusher, while my husband prefers one on the firm side. This is where securing the best mattress topper comes into play. The Birch mattress pad promises to add softness with 3" of latex and cotton.  But we both agreed the mattress was better with the topper, and we kept it. A year later, it’s still on the bed. Here’s why.  Aside from adding softness, I chose the Birch mattress topper because it’s supposed to be heat- and moisture-wicking, and I tend to get hot when I sleep. While Birch mattress products are on the more expensive side, they’re also well made and durable, which was also important to me as I’m trying to cut down on wasteful spending and invest instead in fewer, better items.  If these things are important to you, then Birch is a brand you’ll want to check out.

Who will the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper suit?

Overall, the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper is a great choice for those who want a soft-but-supportive, eco-friendly, non-toxic mattress topper that will last.

Hot sleepers: The mattress topper is designed to naturally distribute heat. Talalay latex, one of the key components of the mattress, is 7x more breathable than other types of latex, and the cover on the mattress topper is made of wool, which is naturally moisture-wicking. I switched to the Birch mattress setup from a memory foam mattress and find it stays much cooler. Back and stomach sleepers. I sleep on my stomach, and this mattress topper is a dream. It’s supportive enough so I don’t feel like I’m sinking into it, but it still manages to feel soft. My husband sleeps on his back and also gives it high ratings. Couples with different firmness preferences: I chose it primarily to soften the Birch original mattress, which is medium-firm, and I prefer a softer mattress. At theNon-Birch mattress owners: The Birch topper is designed to sit on the Birch mattress, which is how I used it, but it can be used with other mattresses as well.

What’s the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper like to sleep on?

Overall comfort and firmness If you’ve never slept on latex bedding before, the experience with this latex-based mattress topper will be slightly different than with memory foam or a traditional down or cotton pillow top. Latex is almost springy to the touch, so it offers softness without that feeling like you’re sinking into the mattress, which I find is especially the case with memory foam.  At the same time, it’s a more supportive topper than you’d get with something like goose down. It’s a good option for those looking for the Goldilocks experience: not too hard, not too soft. Breathability and coolness The Birch mattress topper is designed for breathability. Its cotton cover and wool comfort layer are designed to wick moisture and distribute heat, and Talalay latex is known for its heat distribution properties as well.  One of the reasons I initially switched from a memory foam mattress to the latex hybrid Birch Mattress was because I found a memory foam mattress too hot to sleep on.  The latex hybrid was noticeably cooler, so I was a bit worried that adding a topper would make the Birch mattress sleep hotter, but I found no such thing. The mattress topper is still far cooler than a memory foam version. Things to note One con, after using this topper nightly for almost a year now, there is still a slight crease down the middle of it between where my husband and I sleep. The crease is from the way to the mattress topper was folded and packed in the box. Because we have a king-size bed, each of us has enough room on ‘our side’ that the crease isn’t usually an issue. But, if one of us does cross the great divide, it tends to feel like there’s a blanket or sheet or something bunched up underneath.

Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper design and construction

As I’ve mentioned, this is a high-quality mattress topper. The materials are top of the line, the stitching is tight and secure, and the material of the mattress topper is so soft it’s tempting to just forego the sheets and curl up right on top of it. The handmade topper is made up of three layers:  an organic cotton cover, a hypoallergenic wool layer that doubles as a fire retardant, and the Talalay latex base layer, which in addition to its comfort and support capabilities, it serves as a dust mite repellant too. All of the materials are responsibly sourced, and the cotton and wool layers are organic, while the Talalay latex is domestically made and eco-INSTITUT certified for low emissions.

Ordering, delivery, and set up

Ordering and delivery is done through the mattress website. You simply choose the size mattress topper you need, add it to your cart, and you’re on your way to dreamland. Well, as soon as the mattress topper arrives, anyway. This takes about a week. Shipping is free via FedEx Ground, and Birch includes a free carbon offset credit with the purchase, too, which helps lower the environmental impact of shipping the product. Set up of the mattress topper is also very easy. The mattress topper is dense, so it’s a bit heavy, but nothing I couldn’t lift on my own. I’m a 5'7" woman who used to work out, after all. Once it’s out of the box, you simply lay the topper on your mattress. As I mentioned, there are no straps or mechanisms to attach the topper directly to the bed (see above), which, on the plus side, makes it very easy to set up.  I added a mattress protector over the topper and my mattress, followed by a sheet, and the setup was complete.  One more note, I was a bit concerned that the lack of straps or buttons would make the mattress topper move around a lot, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it stays put.

Birch warranty and trial period

Like the rest of its products, Birch offers a 100-night sleep trial period for the mattress topper. If, after 100 nights, you don’t love the mattress topper, you can return the product for a full refund. The mattress topper also comes with a 10-year warranty.
