Kelie Grosso, owner and founder of Maison Luxe, travels the world in search of one-of-a-kind products for her interior design clients.
THE PROPERTY
Situated across from Pebble Beach’s famous 17 Mile Drive, this home was truly a labour of love for the clients, design team, and local home builder Ryan McNichol. The original home on this site – built in 1975 – was purchased by the Hansford family in 2012 as a second home (their other home is a handmade wonder located in Truckee, California.) with the intention of remodelling the existing structure to add modern amenities, and make a few small changes to the floor plan. As the project moved ahead with the design and planning phases, it became apparent that the most cost-effective way to ‘save’ the house was to completely re-build it. ‘We approached the new home design with an eye for the past – we really wanted to honour the existing floor plan but make it feel more open and modern, keeping the views focused on the Pacific Ocean and stunning natural surroundings,’ explains Kelie Grosso. ‘We worked with landscape designer Martha Criswell to create an unexpected courtyard oasis on the interior back of the home featuring a hand cut stone fireplace, outdoor grill, and amazing lounge furnishings from Janus et Cie. Local foliage including a huge olive tree and various large scale succulents make the courtyard feel like it was part of the original landscaping from 30 years ago,’ says Kelie. The design of this home was completely focused on gathering friends, family, and neighbours to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Outdoor living is paramount in California, however providing a sophisticated yet casual vibe for indoor gathering was equally top of the list for this family. Natural washed linens on upholstered furnishings, wool and jute rugs by Holly Hunt, vintage woven chairs and rope wall sconces dot the scene in bedrooms and the main living room.

Architecturally, the massive (and matching) sliding doors leading from the main living room to the interior courtyard and also to the front terrace of the home create an incredible feeling of indoor / outdoor California living. As we expected, this home has easily transitioned from ‘second home’ to ‘favourite home’ status.
