The 11,000 sq ft Encino family home was entrusted to British-born, LA-based designer Claudia Afshar, who was asked to complete a full renovation of the property while the actor was away filming a recent Hollywood blockbuster.  Afshar’s team said, ‘The brief was for him to move back into his home after an extensive filming schedule, sight unseen, and be thrilled. It was no small order!’ In the limited time they had to discuss prior to the client’s departure, Afshar was given a black and white theme for the kitchen, which is translated through the rest of the open-plan house with the addition of warm neutral tones.  The client was seemingly impressed. ‘As he can be somewhat stoic, we were so moved by his reaction when he came back,’ said Afshar’s team. ‘Perhaps the greatest expression of his thanks has been the number of referrals we have received from him since.’ See: World’s best homes – tour the globe’s most beautiful houses

Entrance Hall & Wine Cellar

Located in the entrance to the home, a curved staircase used to conceal a storage cupboard.   In its place, Afshar created a feature wine cellar designed to showcase the client’s wine collection, complete with LED-backlighting, glass door and stone cladding.

Living room

The entrance hall is neighbored by the formal living room, where textured Arte wall coverings face a monumental marble fireplace. The rooms geometric lines are softened by custom Tom Faulkner coffee and side tables, while the curtains have been given an update courtesy of motorised technology and new textiles. The old fabrics were donated to local non-profit organisations to limit waste.

Kitchen

The client’s request for a black and white color scheme in the kitchen has been achieved by updating the washed-out cabinetry of the previous design. A crisp white finish to the new kitchen cupboards contrasts with the original dark floors, and is accented dramatically with black door handles, and pendant lights from Gubi.  See: Kitchen ideas – decor and decorating ideas for all kitchens  The breakfast bar and adjacent family room features monochromatic stools by Powell & Bonnell, as well as a breakfast dining table by Sovet Italia.

Dining Room

The dining room is dominated by a custom, twelve-seater Hellman Chang dining table, which features brass inlay and gold leaf in its base, and is surrounded by plush curved-back chairs. Above, a subtle John Pomp ceiling chandelier hangs from the room’s vaulted, beamed ceiling.

TV Room

For the TV Room, Afshar was asked to create a room filled with ‘warm, mood and romance’. The result is a luxurious room with a much darker palette, flanked by Arte-designed walls clad in striped black tones. The layout of the sofas directs attention not only to the TV, but also to a grand fireplace below it.

Powder Room

At the centerpiece of the formal powder room is a newly installed Antonio Lupi mirror, complete with backlighting highlighting the texture of the stone-cladded wall. The room has also been modernized with a tap and valves from the black nickel O collection by THG Paris.

Guest House

Although not pictured here, the client’s guest house has been remodelled to become what Afshar calls ‘the ultimate man-cave’, featuring a games room and displays of the actor’s awards and movie posters.
